The timeless beauty of unlacquered brass for luxury hardware

A sophisticated interiors scheme is always open to change, taking into account not just how materials appear at the moment they’re installed, but also how they will alter as time goes on. When specifying luxury hardware, interior designers, architects and homeowners choose unlacquered brass for its timeless style, honest durability and charming, unique patina that develops over the years. While premature wear is never to be desired, ageing gracefully is another thing altogether.

What is unlacquered brass?

Unlike lacquered brass, which is coated in clear, protective lacquer after manufacture to allow the finish to remain unchanged for as long as possible, unlacquered brass hardware is left completely unsealed. Over the course of time, unlacquered brass responds to the atmosphere and the oils on our hands, ever-so-subtly maturing and changing. For this reason, unlacquered brass is known as a ‘living’ finish.

How does a ‘living’ finish develop?

When first installed, unlacquered brass has a mirror-like finish. Over time, however, the shine will slowly become less bright, while the golden colour will become warmer and richer. It is not a scientifically measurable process, as much depends on how the products, from door handles to cupboard knobs, are handled day by day, and where they have been fitted. Frequently touched areas may become lighter, while surfaces that are not much in use may become darker and more ‘antique’ in appearance. Patience is necessary. Eventually, over months or maybe years, the products will acquire a characterful patina that adds unrivalled depth and authenticity to the design scheme.

Why choose unlacquered brass?

Unlike trend-led choices, specifying unlacquered brass shows a regard for longevity and timeless style. It also means accepting that the changing surface – compared to other finishes, which are intended to stay as they are – is intentional and not a flaw. Unlacquered brass may be a traditional finish, but it looks just as good in a modern interior as a period property, introducing warmth, depth and a sense of timeless elegance. And in the same way as a favourite item of clothing reflects how you have worn it over the years, the maturing surface of unlacquered brass tells the entirely individual story of your interior.

Are there any other ‘living’ finishes?

At Courtyard Architectural Hardware many of our ranges include ‘living’ finishes of different types. Whether you are looking for a luxury door handle, cupboard knob or robe hook, you might opt for antique nickel, which offers a warm, silver finish that is timelessly traditional, or dark or coppered bronze, both of which are richly opulent.

How to maintain unlacquered brass

We recommend cleaning unlacquered brass with a soft, dry cloth, avoiding abrasives (which could remove the patina). If you prefer to reinstate its original, bright appearance, choose a high-quality cream or paste and polish according to the instructions. Applying a coat of beeswax occasionally will help to maintain the appearance of your authentically beautiful product.
